SAN DIEGO, CA — The American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (“the Academy”), a national organization supporting estate planning attorneys across the country, today announced that David K. Cahoone, J.D., LL.M., has joined the organization as its new Director of Education.
Cahoone brings more than three decades of experience in estate planning, charitable planning, tax strategy, and legal education to the role. He most recently served as Senior Partner at the Dorcey Law Firm and previously spent nearly six years as Director of Philanthropic Strategies and Planned Giving at Brown University. Earlier in his career, he was a principal at his own firm, David K. Cahoone, PA, and a partner at Esperti Peterson & Cahoone, PA, a practice that served high-net-worth families with estates ranging from $25 million to $500 million.
A nationally recognized keynote speaker, Cahoone has addressed audiences of attorneys, financial advisors, CPAs, life insurance professionals, philanthropic advisors and trust officers at national, regional and local conferences including numerous estate and charitable planning councils. David has most recently presented multiple sessions on 2025 tax reform, impactful charitable giving strategies and the enduring power of the statutory GRAT. He is co-author of “Protect and Enhance Your Estate” (McGraw-Hill), “The Objective Guide to Estate Planning and Life Insurance,” and “The Living Trust Workbook” (Viking-Penguin), and holds an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell and a 10.0 Avvo rating. He earned his J.D. from Western New England University School of Law and his LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Florida College of Law.
“David is someone Robert Armstrong and I have known and respected for many years,” said Sanford M. Fisch, Chief Executive Officer of the Academy. “David’s depth and breadth of knowledge and experience will be a real bonus for Academy Members.”
Cahoone succeeds Tereina Stidd, who led the Academy’s Education Department for five years before returning to private practice. He is spending the coming weeks working alongside the Academy’s team — including staff attorney Jensen Puno — and has now stepped into the role full-time.
An Invitation to Attorneys Familiar with Cahoone’s Training Programs
Cahoone will make his first public appearance as Director of Education at the Academy’s Fall Summit, October 15–18, in San Diego, California. His sessions will tackle advanced legal strategies, asset protection techniques, and effective trust structures, and he will bring the same energy and expertise that has made him a sought-after speaker at conferences nationwide.
Attorneys from around the country who are familiar with Cahoone’s training programs can inquire about how to attend the Fall Summit by emailing Information@aaepa.com.
