Ever feel like your goals are sitting on the shelf while you scramble to keep up with client deadlines and daily fires? You are not alone. Many small law firm owners spend so much time working in the business that the bigger vision for change or growth never gets the attention it deserves.
The truth is, getting unstuck does not require sweeping overnight change. The real progress comes from breaking large projects into bite-size steps, scheduling time to act, and creating momentum you can sustain.
How to Get Moving Again
- Pick one big goal
Choose a single project that would have the greatest impact on your firm. Write down why it matters, how your practice will look once it is achieved, and most importantly, how it will feel to have it done.
- Break it into milestones
Think of the larger chunks of work as mile markers on a road trip. You only need to focus on reaching the next marker, not the entire highway at once.
- Slice milestones into mini steps
Get specific. What small actions are required to hit each milestone? Some will take ten minutes, others a few hours. Remember, you do not need to do it all yourself. Instead of asking, “How do I do this?” ask, “Who can help?”
- Put it on the calendar
Assign deadlines. Aim for two to three small steps per week. A mix of short bursts and focused work sessions will keep the project moving forward.
- Protect your time
Treat each scheduled task as if it were a client consultation or a dentist appointment. You would not cancel unless absolutely necessary. Distractions off, focus on.
- Find accountability
Share your project with someone you trust — a colleague, mentor, or coach. Report weekly on what you accomplished and what comes next. Decide together on how to handle if you fall behind.
A Law Firm Example
- Big Goal: Build a well-trained, inspired team
- First Step: Create an onboarding and training program
- Mini Steps: Document procedures, draft training schedules by position, record training videos, schedule “knowledge check” meetings, and create a training library for future hires
The more detailed you can be on the mini steps the better. This same approach applies to any big initiative, whether it is launching a marketing system, documenting estate planning workflows, or drafting a three-year attorney business plan. Breaking it down makes the impossible feel manageable.
Build Momentum, One Step at a Time
Big change rarely comes all at once. It is the accumulation of small, deliberate steps that strengthen your systems, your team, and your business. When you consistently take action, even modest progress adds up faster than you think. Dust off that goal, pick one action, and start today.
