Do you have dedicated time to working on your business? Not 20 minutes between client meetings, notes jotted down in the margins of the latest business book you are reading, or late-night thoughts when you cannot sleep. I’m talking about days devoted to working ON your business instead of IN your business.
This concept is top of mind for me because I had the pleasure of attending all three of our July Peak Performers meetings. While sitting with these law firm owners, a similar sentiment was shared by each group of Peak Performers. They echoed how the Peak Performers Program is a reset for them. It is a time when they work on their business by focusing on leadership topics, practice management concepts, and leveraging techniques to maximize their time. They are also surrounded by like-minded entrepreneurs who want to grow their law firms too. This time away, at a secluded resort hotel in North County San Diego, away from the hustle and bustle of their offices allows the freedom of time and space to envision and implement steps to create their ideal law firm. If your instant reaction is you are too busy, this type of planning is likely what you need. When you have your head down constantly just getting the work done, you are not strategically guiding the direction of your firm.
One of our multi-year Peak Performers shared that the Peak Performers meetings, which happen four times a year, provide the accountability and consistency he needs as an owner. Each meeting has a goal setting component and he doesn’t want to show up to the next meeting without completing his goal or at least moving the needle on it. He then shared an analogy that rang true for the group. He said attending these meetings is like exercising. You cannot exercise once and be done. You need to do it consistently to be healthy. To have a healthy law firm, you need to review your business regularly. You need to look at your strategic plan and where you are currently compared to your goals for the year.
What are you doing now to work on your business? Are you surrounding yourself with other business owners or a coach that encourages you to grow and systemize your business? If not, what’s the cost to you and your business? I encourage you to reach out to info@aaepa.com for more information on becoming an Academy Member.
