Embarking on the path to enduring success for a law firm is akin to a dance, where every step is intertwined with its culture and client service approach. Join us as we delve into the significance of core values, fostering a positive office culture, and adopting a client-first mindset to shape a legal practice that not only keeps pace but truly stands out.
Why Core Values matter, even for a small law firm, is they articulate the firm’s guiding principles. If you, the attorney, are not available when a situation arises, Core Values can provide direction. Core Values should also guide your hiring and firing process. To have a top-notch team, everyone must live and breathe the values. This type of office culture will attract others who want to make a difference and feel valued.
If you’re coming up short when trying to think of Core Values, you can look at other companies for inspiration and to get your creative juices flowing. It’s important to make sure these are not aspirational values, but in fact values that are already in your law firm.
The Academy’s Core Values are:
- We’re an “A” Team
- We Take the High Road
- Our Members’ Success is Our Success
- Learn, Innovate, Share, and Inspire
Here’s an example of Core Values at work: If my team is working on a project and he or she sees an opportunity to streamline the workflow, they know they should do so because of our core value of Learn, Innovate, Share, and Inspire. They don’t have to ask permission, because it has already been given through our Core Values and company culture.
It is also not enough to take the time to create your Core Values and simply put them in your company handbook. If they only live in your new hire orientation and a handbook, you don’t really have Core Values. Core Values only work if they are integrated into daily practices. You need to weave these values into your company meetings, have them posted in your office so they are top of mind, and create an environment where colleagues can share with others on the team embodying the values (we call it “Caught Being Awesome” and we share in our Microsoft Teams Chat). By empowering your team to operate within the guidelines of these values, they will have more confidence in decision making and client interactions because they know they are operating in the best interest of the law firm and within the vision created by the law firm owner.
This will create a ripple effect with law firm clients. Not only will the attorney be building trust and credibility with clients, but every person the client interacts with at the office will have the same underlying principles and approach to client relationships. Clients will notice a difference when working with a law firm like this. It is one of those things you can “feel” but can’t put a finger on.
In the competitive landscape of the legal industry, success goes beyond legal expertise. A healthy law firm culture, grounded in positive values and client-centric principles, is the cornerstone of a thriving practice. By prioritizing the well-being and development of its team, a law firm not only attracts top talent but also builds a reputation for excellence in client service. In the end, a firm’s success is a collective achievement, driven by the synergy of a positive workplace culture and unwavering commitment to client satisfaction.
