At the Academy, one of our core values is Learn, Innovate, Share and Inspire. I had the privilege to embody this value when I led a two-day training on Developing and Implementing and Outward Mindset (DIOM) for Academy Member Law Firms. Even though I have been conducting these trainings for two years, I became a certified trainer in September 2021 by Arbinger Institute; I am always blown away at the impact it has on attendees both professionally and personally.
Taking time out of your busy day for professional development is hard to do. I get it. Taking two full days is even harder. Then throw in our recommendation that the entire law firm attend at the same time. Now you must think I’m crazy. If I had not gone through and conducted so many of these trainings, I would likely agree with you.
The thing about attending a training as a team is that it gives attendees common knowledge, and in the case of the DIOM, it gives attendees a common language. By attending as a team, our Member Law Firms who participated can tackle obstacles and challenges in a new way. They can achieve greater success, hit larger goals, and streamline roadblocks. This professional development course not only allows for growth as a law firm, it also is an investment in team culture. It shows those at the law firm that the owner(s) value their development and believe in investing time and money to have a positive work environment for their team. It also fosters a cohesive team culture.
As we approach the conclusion of 2023, I urge law firm owners to contemplate their plans for 2024. Is professional development a prominent item on your agenda? What about your team’s development? Have you allocated resources for team building? Is there dedicated time set aside to fortify your team’s cohesion? If not, it’s crucial to prioritize these aspects by scheduling them into your calendar now to ensure they happen!
