When attending an event a common question is, “What’s the dress code?” Most of us are familiar with business and business casual, but when events are more formal, or even more casual, that can cause confusion. The attire for our 30th Anniversary Spring Summit Gala in Chicago next month is Black Tie Optional. If that is making you scratch your head, don’t worry, I have the full scoop below.
Black Tie Optional allows for guests to have formal options to choose from including tuxedos and gowns or dark suits and cocktail dresses. Below are some tips on what to wear.
For the Gentlemen: If you own a tuxedo, bring it. You can always rent formal attire from the tux all the way down to the shoes. You’ll look so dapper dressed to the nines. If you need rental suggestions, email events@aaepa.com. If a tuxedo is out of the question, or comfort zone, don’t worry! Sporting your best dark suit and tie is your next best bet. Think Cary Grant or George Clooney and you can’t go wrong.
For the Ladies: This is your opportunity to get dressed in your best and go out in style. Maybe you have a few dresses waiting in your closet or you want to upgrade to something new. With any formal occasion like the Academy Gala, there are a few attire etiquette tips to consider. A floor-length gown, tea-length or cocktail dress, or formal pant suit are all appropriate for this Black Tie Optional event. Color is your friend, however, try to avoid anything too bright or floral patterned for an evening event. When it comes to straps or strapless, short sleeves or long, lace or sequins, anything goes. Whatever your choice, we want you to feel fabulous in what you wear. It’s your time to glam it up! If you’re hesitant to invest in an outfit you may only wear once, there are rental options as well such as renttherunway.com where you can rent designer dresses for a significant discount off of the purchase price and return it when you’re done.
We will be inside on carpeted floors, so it’s the perfect time to bring out your fancy shoes. Pumps, open-toed or strappy, are all appropriate choices. Just make sure you can walk in them of course. And last, but not least, don’t forget your accessories. Although we will be inside, it’s always a good idea to plan for a wrap or jacket. Don’t forget your jewelry and matching handbags.
If the word dress code makes you nervous, I recommend this webpage that details everything from casual, dressy casual to semi-formal and black tie. This will help you feel confident and prepared when you meet with clients, go to lunch with a Center of Influence, attend a networking event, or celebrate at a 30th Anniversary Gala!
