‘Tis the time of year for travel! Whether you are traveling to visit loved ones during the upcoming holidays, or you’re staying close to home and making just one or two more (ok, maybe three or four more) trips to the store to finish up your shopping list, it is definitely the time of year to be on the move!
Whatever your holiday plans, it’s inevitable that we find ourselves with some “idle” time on our hands as we commute from point A to point B and it can be tough to find something “useful” to do with your time. I’m the type of person who is constantly moving. My mother meant no joke when she would tell people when I was a child that I was either wide awake and bouncing around, or asleep.
Those have always been my two modes. As such, it’s important to me that I make the most of my waking hours. And traveling, whether by land or air, has always been a bit of a puzzler for me. You mean I have to sit still, try not to fall asleep, and spend hours at a time that way? What is a girl to do? Naturally, pick up my nearest mobile device and try to find something entertaining. And a few years ago, boy oh boy did I come across the greatest app I would ever use…
The Podcast app. Every mobile phone either comes with it installed or is only a few clicks away from having it. Now, I’m a lover of talk radio (despite my millennial status). Chalk it up to parents and grandparents who hold a staunch belief that books and radio outrank television in just about every scenario. At any rate, I found myself a few years ago perusing the thousands of podcasts available for immediate listening, and I was hooked.
Since then I have been a self-proclaimed Podcast Junkie. I subscribe to over 100 Podcasts and yes, I listen to every one of them, regularly. I even go back into the archives of Podcasts after I subscribe to them to listen to things I may have missed. Can you imagine the repository of information that is available on any topic you can think of?
As you are on the move during the holidays looking for something to keep you busy, entertained, or learning something new, consider your trusty Podcast app. I’ve even listed some of my faves below – both for business and for pleasure:
Business:
- GTD: Get Things Done
- The Unpodcast
- The Art of Charm
- HBR Ideacast
- Girlboss Radio
- Jocko Podcast
- The Entreleadership Podcast
- The Ziglar Show
- The #AskGaryVee Show
- Marketing Over Coffee
Pleasure:
- Radiolab
- Science Vs.
- Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!
- This American Life
- Freakonomics Radio
- More Perfect
- Rough Translation
- Strangers
- Undone
- Surprisingly Awesome
I read somewhere (or maybe I heard it on a Podcast) that if we aren’t learning, we’re dying (attributed most recently to Albert Einstein). I live to learn from those around me and from the experiences, advice, and stories they share. I encourage each of you to take some “idle” time and perhaps find a podcast that interests you and keeps you sharp.
Happy listening,
Kathryn Adams
