In the estate planning world, we’re all familiar with the importance of creating a legacy, and putting that legacy into a form that can be passed from one generation to another. One’s legacy can be to leave our children with the structures and ambitions to make a difference in this world, another may be to carry our parents’ or grandparents’ traditions or spirituality to future generations, while yet another may pass on a work ethic or education or contribution mindset that marks our existence here and gives a map to those who follow us.
These elements of a legacy are not tangible assets as much as they may be stories, photos, diaries or testimonials that serve as proof of the difference we have made to others… an explanation of why we were here and what was important to us. What we can be known for.
At the recent Academy Summit, the mothers of the co-founders were toasted. Robert Armstrong’s mother, Marion Armstrong, along with Sanford Fisch’s mother, Iris Fisch were honored and introduced to staff, Members and guests at the evening’s black tie event.
Though Marion had proofed estate planning documents for a number of years in the 1980s for Robert and Sandy’s law firm… she hadn’t ever been to one of the Academy’s events before. She’s 91 years old now, and had a great time being the belle of the ball.
This was Iris’s second Summit. The first time she attended… she sneaked into the event with other family Members to surprise Sandy for a 50th birthday celebration a few years ago. For her trip, she flew in from Florida for the festivities and it was a joy to have her be there!
Seeing the looks on both Robert and Sandy’s faces really brought home the idea of “legacy.”
Both women have made a lasting mark by raising wonderful men who have not only impacted their children but hundreds of attorneys and thousands of clients. The moms were proud and happy, the sons incredibly moved to be able to share the evening with two of the most important women in their lives.
