We have just concluded the bulk of the Academy’s 2013 Fall Summit here in San Diego and what an event it has been! It seems hard to believe that just five days ago we descended upon the Coronado Marriott Resort and Spa on Coronado Island with the myriad of materials it takes to successfully put on one of our bi-annual events and welcomed all of our Members, guests, sponsors and speakers to the continuation of our 20th anniversary celebration.
However, what stands out in my mind the most from this event is not the thousands of details that must be attended to by the Academy team as well as our attendees, or the number of days it may have been since any one of us has had a decent night’s rest, but rather the unrelenting dedication of the Members of the Academy to their practice and their continued education.
A professor of mine in college once said to me, “The day we stop learning is the day we die,” which I believe is a quote borrowed from author Michael Scott. As a fresh-faced college sophomore, those words more than likely went in one ear and out the other. These Academy events, however, bring those words to life in a way I couldn’t have ever imagined.
I have a level of respect for these attorneys and their team Members that is unparalleled. This group of inspiring professionals devotes 5 days (sometimes more) of their lives to working on their business rather than in their business at least twice a year at Academy events. And they don’t just show up, put in the time, enjoy the “vacation” and go home. They are, by far, the most diligent group I have encountered. The dedication to a lifetime of learning is really something to be a part of. Despite the hours of speakers and material presented to them, they are fully engaged in each session. They are eager to ask their questions during sessions and engage in meaningful conversation with our Legal Education, Software, Web, Marketing, and Practice Management departments as well as other Academy Members in the hallways between sessions and after hours. It is truly inspiring to see a weary-eyed attorney who has been in sessions for several days still approaching an Academy team member for more information on a topic that will help them take their law practice to the next level of success.
My hat is off to you, Academy Members and guests who joined us at this and many other Academy events. Please share with our blogging community what it is that makes you continue to thirst for that knowledge and let us know what you took away from this event. We are eager to learn with you!
